Conducting Virtual Safety Reports (VSR) as a Remote Inspector
Updated over 2 months ago

With Safety Reports, remote inspections have never been easier. This guide will walk you through the process of conducting virtual inspections on behalf of hosts who have a Safety Reports Inspection Account.

A two-way communication link is established via the web, allowing inspectors in an office or other offsite location to connect with personnel in the field who act as their “eyes and ears.” The Host Inspector starts the session from the web, takes screenshots of what the Remote Inspector sees, and uploads them through the Inspection App on the web.

This service operates via a hosted web session, requiring only an internet connection— no mobile app download is necessary.

Joining the Virtual Inspection Session

  1. Receive an Invitation

    • The Host Inspector initiates the session from the web.

    • A text message or email containing a session link is sent to the Remote Inspector.

  2. Open the Session on Your Mobile Browser

    • Tap the session link on your mobile device.

    • Your default mobile browser will open the session.

    • If prompted, select a browser to proceed.

  3. Host Inspector Joins the Session

    • The Host Inspector follows the same steps on their end using a mobile device or computer.

💡 Important: To successfully conduct an inspection, camera and microphone permissions must be enabled. Follow the steps below to adjust settings if necessary.

Granting Camera & Microphone Permissions

For Android Devices

  1. Go to Settings → Select ‘Apps & Notifications’.

  2. Choose your web browser (e.g., Google Chrome).

  3. Tap ‘Permissions’ and enable:

    • Camera

    • Microphone

If you accidentally block permissions, revisit these settings to allow access.

For Apple Devices

  1. Open Settings → Scroll to your web browser (e.g., Safari).

  2. Scroll until you see ‘Camera’ and ‘Microphone’.

  3. Select each and choose ‘Allow’.

Recording Inspection Items During Virtual Inspection

Once connected, the two-way video link appears in a new browser window. Each party will see:

  • A smaller view of themselves (or what their camera is aimed at).

  • A larger view of the other person’s feed.

Adjusting Camera View

  • By default, the Remote Inspector’s front camera is selected.

  • Switch to the back camera for better quality:

    • Open Audio & Video Settings

    • Select Back Camera

    • Click Apply

To maximize screen space, close the Audio & Video Settings drop-down menu.

Capturing Photos & Inspection Data

  • The Remote Inspector should point their camera at relevant items.

  • The Host Inspector takes screenshots remotely via the web interface.

  • No additional actions (such as pressing buttons) are required from the Remote Inspector.

Leaving the Virtual Inspection Session

  • When the inspection is complete, both parties must select ‘Leave’ in their web browser.

  • Close the browser to fully exit the session.

By following these steps, remote inspectors can efficiently conduct virtual inspections while ensuring accuracy and compliance with Safety Reports.
