Referencing Standards

Referencing standards is optional—checklists can include them as Safety Reports checklists do, but they are not required.

If referencing standards in-line, they must be:

  • Easily understood

  • Kept short, except in recommendations

Examples:

  • Bad ‘Yes’ response:

    • "Aisles/walkways are kept neat and orderly in accordance with OSHA General Industry Standard Subpart ‘D’ ‘Walking and Working Surfaces’ 1910.22(a).”

    • Issue: Too long for a mobile app, making it difficult for inspectors to read quickly.

  • Good ‘Yes’ response:

    • "Aisles/walkways kept clean and orderly (1910.22).”

    • Benefit: Short and includes the applicable standard.

State/local government standards are typically public and can be linked in-app using hyperlinks:

  • Safety Reports uses this function to link inspectors directly to Department of Labor sites.

  • Hyperlinks can be added to inspections if the website is publicly accessible (not on an intranet or requiring sign-in).

  • Hyperlink guidelines:

    • Reference text must be 20 characters or less.

    • No limit on hyperlink length, but linking to very specific sections of large websites may cause performance issues on mobile devices with weak internet connections.

Standards from other sources can be used, but website accessibility restrictions must be considered.
